As We Grow

We grow up and we learn
We learn to look as we turn
We learn who is a true friend
And who’ll try to push you off the bend

You learn that what you knew when you were young
Wasn’t always right and that there are songs yet to be sung
You learn that the judgments you made about people might’ve been wrong
But you still believe them because you’ve had them for so long

You grow and become more comfortable in your own skin
You learn that life’s not a game you must win
You learn that things don’t always go your way
And learn to say goodbye to the negativity of yesterday

You become aware of those you can truly trust
And of those people who treat you like dust
You learn when to hold back and when to speak
You realize that you can gain all you seek

You realize that the people who held you down
Were terrified to see you move uptown
You realize who and what people really are
And to the negative people you can say au revoir
As an adult you seek friends who are true
People who really see you
As an adult you know
Who in your life you must let go

You are glad to have a true friend
Somebody who’ll be there even when you offend
Somebody who you can talk and listen to
Because as an adult it’s the best to do

You need to let go of what you thought you knew
See how others around you grew
You need to be grateful for everything
You need to wait and see what the future will bring
